How To Become A Video Game Tester

By Pietro T Gambini

The modern phenomenon of playing video games all day might not seem like a career to many, but maybe it's closer to the truth than you think. Can you really earn money doing something you love?

From our extended research into this topic we've found that video game testing jobs do exist, but they might not all match up to your dream expectations of this role.

Playing video games for a living is like many other dream roles, achievable, but only with a strong work ethic and an eyes open approach. Read on to discover what areas you need to concentrate on to give yourself the best possible chance of securing a video game tester job.

1. There are plenty of scams out there which will gladly take your cash in return for some quickly rehashed e-book that promises to make you a guru in the video game testing community. Take these offers with a pinch of salt and use your intuition to discern the wheat from the chaff.

We don't want to rule out the e-book route into video game testing, as some of these products do work, but they're in a small minority and can usually be spotted by the more down to earth earning figures.

New video game testers won't achieve much more than $7-$10 an hour when they start out in this career. Experience is counted on previous roles within the industry, not how many hours you've played COD non-stop. You'll need to graft to show willing and work hard to make opportunities your own.

2. You need to hone your communication skills so that you can articulate your findings to other employees and games designers. Whether you work in a building or from home, you must be able to make your points clear on issues within a game, as million dollar budgets ride on these. Being able to read, write and speak English is a must.

During conferences and meetings you'll need these communication skills to adequately make your point. It doesn't matter how good you are at finding bugs if you can't communicate this to others.

3. By showing perseverance and determination in your actions you'll set yourself up for success and avoid the failure that many other people fall prey to. These factors apply to every job in the world.

To become a games tester will require copious amounts of character as you battle numerous rejections along the way. By persevering despite knock-backs you'll give yourself more chance of success.

If you lack some qualifications which would make a real difference in your new career as a quality assurance tester, you can learn these at an educational institution as long as you have the willpower to succeed.

4. Professionalism will set you apart from your peers, but make you ultimately more employable to companies. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can earn large amounts of money by sitting on a bean bag at home all day gaming and snacking away.

If you're lucky enough to work from home you'll still need to follow the rules, regulations and working practices of a normal job, which is to say working hours, reporting and regular communication.

The greater likelihood will see you having to attend an office based environment for your job role and as such, you'll be expected to follow dress and behaviour standards.

As with any role a quality up to date and accurate resume will elevate you above the masses, so ensure this is well written and coherent. At no part on the resume or job application should you mention video game tester - you're now looking to become a quality assurance employee.

5. Your goals should be realistic and achievable, so that you don't become overly disappointed early on. The gaming industry is flooded with potential new testers and it will take time to find your path.

It could take years to land that first dream job, so be prepared for disappointment and rejection early on, but be ready to dive on any chance or foot in the door you get. They'll be plenty of opposition for every role, so do anything you can to stand out.

E-books are not the devil, some of these products will make you money, but go in with your eyes open and be prepared to make small amounts at first.

The realistic nature of a games tester is repetition, repetition, repetition. You won't be blasting through COD or Uncharted for eight hours a day every day. You'll be purposely looking for bugs and looking how to effectively break games, so that developers can implement bug fixes on future builds.

As long as you go into the games industry with the right attitude and expectations you won't face as many disappointments and this in turn will keep the inner fires burning for your passion.
